Why Syria’s Islamic Front is bad news for radical groups?



I wanted to share an article in which I agree mostly published in The National magazine. I find this magazine quiet good at its work.

One of the mistakes analysts of the Syrian conflict often make is to assess rebel groups exclusively based on the slogans these organisations use. Many observers already recognise that hard-line Islamist rhetoric is more often than not used to attract funding. But in recent weeks, this rhetoric has become even more essential to prevent a deeply worrying trend: more Syrians have been drifting towards the orbit of radical groups such as Jabhat Al Nusra as a consequence of their efficiency and tireless focus on the battlefield.

This trend can be best examined by looking into the newly-formed Islamic Front, a Salafi-leaning alliance of at least seven of the most powerful rebel groups in Syria.

The nexus of this alliance was Jaish Al Islam, a merger of initially 51 groups led by Zahran Alloush from Damascus. Alloush’s alliance was seen by extremists as a Saudi scheme in lieu of the US-backed Military Councils. When Jaish Al Islam was formed in September, it started to face hostile criticism by supporters of radical groups, especially as the group lost ground in several areas around Damascus to the regime’s Iranian-backed militias. Alloush, according to sources, met senior members of Jabhat Al Nusra to contain the situation. He also recorded a video in which he praised Jabhat Al Nusra and its ideological proximity to Jaish Al Islam.
Maintaining ties with Jabhat Al Nusra has been practically unavoidable for rebel groups. Jabhat Al Nusra has successfully won hearts and minds of local communities through its efficiency not only on the battlefield but also in the delivery of aid to people. Fighters from other groups recognise its popularity and avoid confrontation with it.
The Islamic Front succeeded where Zahran Alloush failed: it convinced Jabhat Al Nusra that the alliance would work closely with it, but only quietly. The attacks against Salafi groups died down noticeably after the formation of the Front.
The closer relationship between the Islamic Front and Jabhat Al Nusra is a marriage of convenience, as the two groups increasingly view the Al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) as a menace.
For Jabhat Al Nusra, Isis threatens to sabotage the Al Qaeda project in Syria. For Salafi groups, and an increasing number of ordinary Syrians, Isis has been fighting on the wrong front, distracting fighters, and is busy building its imagined state. Isis has even alienated radical groups such as Ahrar Ash-Sham by killing some of its commanders and fighters. Isis has also clashed with Jabhat Al Nusra in many regions, lately in Deir Ezzor after it ambushed fighters affiliated to Jabhat Al Nusra to retake the Conoco gas plant in Al Mayadeen.
Ordinary Syrians are vehemently opposed to open fights among rebel groups, regardless of the reasons, and want them to focus on the real battle against the regime. For example, though Ahrar Ash-Sham’s rank-and-file fighters are boiling with anger against Isis, Ahrar and most other groups believe that the Iraqi scenario in which Sunnis fought each other should not be repeated in Syria.
Another point to emphasise about the relationship between Jabhat Al Nusra and the Islamic Front is that each side believes that it can eventually pull the other towards it. Jabhat Al Nusra, unlike Isis, is focused on battles against the regime and does not attempt to impose its own strict ideology.
In fact, according to informed sources, Alloush met Jabhat Al Nusra’s leader, Abu Mohammed Al Jolani, sometime in the autumn and tried unsuccessfully to convince him to publicly abandon Al Qaeda and join his rebel merger. Alloush said in a recent statement that he had met Jolani two years ago.
Jabhat Al Nusra, meanwhile, has started to distance itself from Isis. The rift between these two groups became clear a few months ago and Jabhat Al Nusra’s leader even considered rejoining Isis to contain the infighting until the downfall of the regime. But he was talked out of that by both Al Qaeda headquarters and individuals from the Gulf who recognise the bad reputation of Isis.
Regardless of the veracity of these claims – recounted to me by multiple informed sources – these alliances are fluid and each one of these groups can still be pulled into another orbit.
Contrary to claims made by observers of the recent mergers, the alliance of Salafi groups is bad news for Al Qaeda. The formation of this alliance has significantly halted the drifting of Syrian fighters by virtue of its Islamic rhetoric and pragmatism. These groups have already drawn Ahrar Ash-Sham, a long-time ally of Jabhat Al Nusra, towards them while avoiding a confrontation with the latter.
In conclusion, the Islamic Front and like-minded Salafi groups should be seen as an opportunity to counter Al Qaeda rather than a threat to Syria’s future. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that rank-and-file fighters are not completely in sync with their leaders in terms of ideology, including members of Jabhat Al Nusra.
The secular-leaning Free Syrian Army has failed miserably as a counterweight to radicals as it could not establish itself as an efficient force against the regime while it was seen as a puppet for outsiders.
The situation has deteriorated since then, and the second best thing is to support the latest powerful alliance. The alternative is simply to drive these giants towards Al Qaeda.

MONTHLY REPORT


OPINION OF THE EDITOR

This month we witnessed many developments about Syria and related with Syria. First of all we witnessed major Islamic resistance groups fighting the regime merging under the name of Islamic Front. This was a wise decision which should be made. But with the great advantages it will bring also new disadvantages which were not present before. Mainly the vast need of continuous logistic support for such a force.
On other side we see Iran-USA lowering tensions and starting a new dialogue between signing a nuclear deal giving Iran a deep breath as a first result. Also we hear ongoing secret negotiations between Hezbossatan and USA with the mediation of UK. While all these happening we see a rift in policies between KSA / Israel and USA which is positioning Israel and KSA together surprisingly. In my opinion USA is acting with Iran, Russia and indirectly Syrian regime to end the conflict in a way which both sides will enjoy but not the Syrians. In this game we see Turkey taking a new position which will adopt it to new position of the USA conflicting its stance from the start of the Syrian uprising.
I cannot predict the course of the conflict but I see in future the parts of the conflict will seem to be mainly KSA and muslim individuals supported Islamic Resistance and the remaining powers including USA,Russia and Iran together. A possible loss of logistical support of Turkey will affect resistance badly which I wish not to happen. This also will damage the reputation of Turkey's so called policy based which is based on principles.

I also would like to mention about the Islamic Groups. After the announcement of Zawahiri I see a possible future conflict between JAN and ISIS. And disobedience of ISIS will affect the position of Zawahiri. In my opinion one of the biggest threat for resistance after regime is the infighting between them. Mostly between ISIS and the other groups. I see other groups try to avoid any conflict with ISIS to a date as late as possible. But I wish they can end it peacefully even I do not have much hope.

I think by time the support of Hezbossatan will not continue as it was before. And as it begins to decrease the regime and other forces will try to end the conflict in a way they like as I mentioned. And I think this phase has began.

IMPORTANT NEWS OF THIS MONTH


  • This month regime showed surprising advance in Damascus and Aleppo fronts. Previously there was an expected attack with the Hezbossatan militias deployed in villages Nubl and Zahra. Either this was a tactic to change the ateention from east to western side or the regime really had an intention to move towards the city or try to help Mingh airport which was under siege that time.Regime advanced to Khanaser and Safira and took Khanaser and surrounding important villages on the way to Aleppo showing an advance to Nairab airport. There is still clashes going close to the airport but still I do not have precise info about the situation between Safira and Aleppo.

  • Commander of Liwa al Tawheed Abdulkader Saleh is martyred after a regime bombing in Aleppo.

  • One of the most important news of this month is the announcement of merging Islamic Groups under the name of Islamic Front consisting of 7 major groups.




  • Commander Mohammad Jamalizadeh of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the southeastern province of Kerman was killed in the last few days by (so called) Wahhabi terrorists", the agency said, giving no more details.



  • In early days of this month regime advanced in east Ghouta in Damascus taking over Sbenah in 7 Nov. after taking Al-Dhiyabiyah & Al-Hussainiya. Then Hjeira fell to regime hands. 

  • Opposition forces captured Sadad and Mahin respectively. After Mahin they captured regime's ammunition depots. They took hundreds of tons of ammunition and some weapons from these facilities and this was a major success for opposition and showing how desperate the regime is being unable to protect these depots which are located about 90 kms. to center of Damascus city.

  • Another important event in end of first week was announcement of Zawahiri about JAN and ISIS. He asked ISIS to join its forces to JAN in Syria and continue to operate in Iraq under its name. Most possibly this announcement is replied by disobedience of ISIS. The tension between to gruops is likely to increase in future despite the common activities in some areas.

  • NDF Aleppo Chief Commander Brigadier General Hassan Mohammed Khashir is killed by mujahideen.

  • There was an important bombing of opposition forces in Damascus on regime forces. They blasted and brought down fully a building where high ranking regime officials were holding a meeting. This attack killed at least 31 regime forces including at least two regime generals and high ranking officials. According to opposition forces loss of regime is about 60 people.

  • After advance of regime forces in East Ghouta in first days of month opposition forces started a surprise attack few weeks later resulting in capturing of Jarba, Al Abada, Al Qasmiya, Al Badariya, Al Qassa ve Deir Salman villages in East Ghouta. This was a major success for mujahideen and a shock for regime. Regime and Hezbossatan and other shiite groups suffered heavy losses in these clashes and lately it came to surface that both sides blaming each other for this. Especially these clashes and the losses of Hezbossatan in Qalamoun front and other fronts is putting it into trouble in Lebanon in long term. As I predicted before Hezbossatan cannot stand against continuous fight and losses in Syria. In case of oppositions ability to continue to fight against the regime will force them to change their tactics and try to negotiate. I do not have precise information about Oteibah but there is heavy clashes ongoing. And I do not know the opposition was able to break the siege or made some more supply channels available after this advancement.

  • Another important event is the nuclear deal mainly between USA and Iran. I will mention this later in general opinion part.

Rebels in Qalamoun – South Homs have a very interesting strategy. Instead of keeping in a area and then being besieged, they are moving fastly, with convoys of hundreds of fighters, from a town to another town, exhausting regime and hezbollah forces. It seems that they decieded to use guerilla warfare in the mountains. Regime, and also Hezbollah, are not prepared for that. Example: They stormed Maheen and Sadad in Homs, giving them enough time to storm Mahhen Ammunitions Depots. Then, they tactically reatreated to take over the ammuniton base 413 in Qalamoun near Nasriyah. They stormed Deir Attiyah, then retreated to storm Maaloula and then re enter Deir Attiya. Regime is becoming crazy.

  • Daraa-Nawa: Muhalif güçler Nawa'nın doğusunda bulunan Tal Ebu İlyas ve Tal Ebu Ahba'yı ele geçirerek Ezraa(İzra)'dan 61.ve 112. Tugaylara giden ikmal yolunu kesti. Muhsin Makhluf komutası altında bulunan çok önemli askeri noktalar. Çatışmalar esnasında 30 rejim askeri öldürüldü, 1 tank, bir doçka ve muhtelif silah ve mühimmat ele geçirildi. Bir tank ve 3 BMP tahrip edildi. / Opposition forces liberated the Tal Abu Elias and Tal Abu Ahba east of Nawa cutting the supply line from Ezraa to Brigades 61 and Brigade 112 HQ; Both brigades are the most important in the Syrian army under Mohsen Makhlouf command. 30 regime soldiars were killed during this battle. A carrier was destroyed 1 tank, 1 Doshka and 2 AAF, different amunitions seized and 1 BMP, and 3 tanks were destroyed.
